Arizona Petrified Wood

One of the most well-known fossils, petrified wood is a fascinating example of mineral replacement. Trees in ancient ecosystems were buried in thick layers of sediments. Over eons of time, each wood fiber was replaced crystals of silica, in the form of agate. The rainbow of colors comes from trace minerals such as iron and manganese oxides. The petrified wood found in Northeastern Arizona is from the late Triassic period, over 200 million years ago.
